Scripture Reading — Matthew 13:31-35

The relative smallness of God’s people and God’s work is a repeating theme in the Bible. In the Old Testament, only a small group of people remain faithful to God—they’re called the remnant. Jesus picks up on that theme when he compares the kingdom of heaven to a mustard seed and to yeast.
Reformation includes the transformation of societies and institutions. When reformation occurs, spouses work together to create homes that conform to God’s designs. Teachers become person builders, and doctors become healers. Businesspeople become job creators, and lawyers become counselors. The list goes on. Each sphere of society is touched and transformed. God produces the character of Christ within us so that we can offer the hope of a transformed world.
The Bible refers to yeast being mixed or hidden in the flour to make dough, no one can see it anymore. It’s so small that it seems to be gone! But although the yeast is small, it has a large effect. Jesus describes someone mixing up about 60 pounds of flour—that would make a lot of dough! Can you picture how much bread would come from all that mixed flour? A transformation would take place as the yeast did its work, making the dough rise. What a difference a little yeast can make!
As Jesus says, the kingdom of heaven is like that. It may seem small, but it makes an amazing, transformative difference.
There’s a mighty reformation sweeping o’er the land,
God is gathering His people by His mighty hand;
For the cloudy day is ending and the evening sun is bright,
With a shout of joy we hail the light.
Oh, the reformation glory!
Let it shine to every land:
We will tell the blessed story;
In its truth we e’er shall stand.
The Reformation Glory written by Charles W. Naylor
Lord, help us not to grow weary when transformation seems small. May we have eyes of faith to trust that you will bring about great results. We pray for the reforming of our society according to the teaching of your Word. May each person we meet today see a picture of your kingdom in us. In Jesus name. Amen.
