Whatever Jesus Does, He Does Well

Mark’s gospel is a unique gospel. It is not a biography of Jesus, unlike Matthew or Luke, because it does not dwell on Jesus’ family history. Instead, Mark is a record of Jesus’ actions and achievements. It shows Jesus as a Savior who conquerors demons, disease, and death. Mark wants to transform believers with his account and not just inform them. One thing we can learn about Jesus through the Gospel of Mark is whatever Jesus does, He does it well! Jesus’ acts of healing illustrate His power and willingness to restore. In our chosen text, we see the healing of the deaf and mute man, which brings about not only a physical restoration but a spiritual restoration as well. We all carry something broken. It can be in our bodies, our relationships, our thoughts, our families, our community, and even our hope. We have to trust God in every area of our lives and pray and ask Him to help heal and restore those areas. The good news of the Gospel is that not only that Jesus saves but that Jesus also restores. In Mark 7:31-37, we learn that:
Jesus has the power to restore your spiritual cause. (verses 31-32)
“Again, departing from the region of Tyre and Sidon, He came through the midst of the region of Decapolis to the Sea of Galilee. Then they brought to Him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, and they begged Him to put His hand on him.”
A cause is a person or thing that is dedicated to supporting or fighting for. It’s a reason to be motivated by your actions. We don’t know who they were but they had a cause to do what it took to get this deaf and blind man to Jesus for a healing. Do you have a spiritual cause to get to Jesus that needs His restorative power?
Jesus has the power to restore your spiritual condition. (verses 33-35)
“And He took him aside from the multitude, and put His fingers in his ears, and He spat and touched his tongue. Then, looking up to heaven, He sighed, and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” Immediately his ears were opened, and the [a]impediment of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly.”
Throughout His ministry, Jesus used different methods of healing. His restorative power was not dependent on one method but on the sovereign power of God. Look what Jesus did to the man. First, Jesus put His fingers in the man's ears. This seems to indicate his hearing would be restored. Jesus spits on His finger and touches the man’s tongue to let him know that his speech was going to be healed. Then Jesus touched him and said to him, "Ephphatha", which means “be opened" in Aramaic, and immediately the man's ears were opened, and he began to speak plainly. Though Jesus' approach may seem unusual, the important thing to remember is that Jesus touched him and spoke a word and the man's condition was healed. Jesus can do the same for you and me.
Jesus has the power to restore your spiritual connection. (verses 36-37)
“Then He commanded them that they should tell no one; but the more He commanded them, the more widely they proclaimed it. And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He makes both the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”
Good news is hard to keep quiet! Jesus commanded the people to keep this man's miracle to themselves, but they did not. They just could not! The more He insisted they keep quiet about the miracle, the more they talked. They were amazed by the work of Christ: "He has done all things well." When you have that connection to Jesus, it’s hard to keep what He’s done for you to yourself. When Jesus sets us free, the whole world needs to know. We, too, should be spreading the news that Jesus is a life changing, soul saving Lord.
Through Jesus' restorative power, I believe the life of this man who experienced this healing encounter from Jesus was never the same. Meeting Jesus changed everything for him, and He can do the same thing for you and I today. Whatever your spiritual condition, Jesus can restore you. He can help deliver you from addiction and lust. He can forgive your sin and help you live a godly life. He can lift your burdens and give you peace. Perhaps you have slipped in your walk with God. Perhaps you are not talking to Him like you once did. Maybe you are not listening to Him like you should. I believe Jesus is saying to you, “Be opened”. Open your ears to hear the wonderful truth of God’s Word. Open your mouth and confess your sins to God. Then let your lips speak of His wonderful work of Christ in your life - HE HAS DONE ALL THINGS WELL!
Saved to Serve,
Pastor Keith
