Scripture Reading — 1 Corinthians 7:7-9; James 1:22-27
Singleness is not a season to be endured but a gift to be embraced. People who are single have a unique opportunity to focus wholeheartedly on their relationship with God and his purposes for their lives. A single person can serve the Lord with undivided devotion, exploring their passions, and using their time and resources to serve for the benefit of others. Singleness allows a person to develop a deeper intimacy with God and to fully pursue God’s calling in their life.
Though society may emphasize romantic relationships, God sees the value and potential in being single. He has equipped you with unique gifts and opportunities to make a difference in the world. Remember that your worth is not defined by your marital status but by your identity as beloved children of God.
According to Pew Research, the United States has one of the world’s highest rates of children living in single-parent households, more than three times the global average. For comparison, look at the rates in other countries:
United States: 23%
Canada: 15%
India: 5%
Nigeria: 4%
China: 3%
Global Rate: 7%
It is important to understand the challenges single parents face. Single parents have to accomplish on their own what often is a challenge for two parents. Without a partner, however, they need emotional support. Some single parents find themselves overwhelmed, deep in debt, and often in financial hardship. Some no longer feel accepted in certain circles because of their status.
Single parents need the help of the Christian community. James calls us to put our faith into practice by reaching out to widows and orphans. Had James been writing today, he would have included single parents and their children too.
If you are single, seek God’s guidance, surrendering your desires and plans into his loving hands. Ask God for wisdom in using your singleness to glorify him and invest in meaningful relationships, serving others and sharing the love of Christ. And as church members, let’s encourage our single saints, and let’s pray and ask God how we can be a blessing to them. In the church everyone should be accepted, supported, and included.
Dear God, help all who have the gift of singleness to embrace it fully, seeking Your purpose and serving others. Grant contentment, wisdom, and intimacy with you. Use them for Your glory and purpose in the world. And help us as members of Your church to reach out to all who stand alone as they raise their children and give us all the grace to accept and learn from each other. In Jesus' name, Amen.
