Scripture Reading — Genesis 1:26-27; Proverbs 17:17
At first Adam was alone, and God said that was “not good” (Genesis 2:18). Adam needed a companion, someone with whom to share the path of life. So God created woman and thus made a community of human beings who would reflect the Trinity.
To be in the image of God is to be in relationship with God and with fellow human beings. Author Hans Reinders calls the image of God the “gift of friendship.” God created humankind in God’s image: male and female, people in relationship with one another.
God’s intent was that humans so love one another, so devote themselves to one another, so serve and be served by one another that they are unique individuals as well as a loving community. Sadly, Adam and Eve’s unspoiled community didn’t last, but God wasn’t finished with us yet!
Friendships aren’t always easy. Friends go through seasons of trial, arguments, differences of opinion, and busy schedules. Along the way, new friends are made, and old friendships sometimes fade. Friends can influence us for good and for bad. Friendships can be a lot of work. But when they are at their best, friendships are also very rewarding. Real friends support us and also challenge us. They see us for who God intended us to be, and they help us grow in the grace and love of Christ.
The Bible contains stories of deep friendships. David and Jonathan’s friendship is a great example of one that lasted through deep difficulties (1 Samuel 19-20). Friendships that endure are filled with love all the time.
Who are your friends? How are you supporting them and encouraging them? How are they supporting and encouraging you? Are your friendships filled with love at all times?
Father, help us in our friendships to love each other as you have called us to love. In Jesus name. Dear God, thank you for not leaving Adam by himself. Thank you for creating humans as a community. Thank you for your gift of friendship, which we enjoy with you and with each other. In Jesus name, Amen.
