Scripture Reading — Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
Have you ever heard the expression “The family that prays together stays together”? Some might also like the sound of something similar: “Folks who play together stay together.” Some of us can recall from our childhood the great joy we experienced with our families when we did things together.
The observations of the writer of Ecclesiastes are right on! “There is a time … to laugh”—also at ourselves. And even research verifies the conclusion that “a cheerful heart is good medicine” (Proverbs 17:22). Stress is greatly reduced when we have a tears-producing, almost uncontrollable belly laugh. Relationships are strengthened when we laugh with each other.
In today’s fast-paced world, where technology often serves as an obstacle to face-to-face interaction, the significance of community bonding is so important. For the church, fun activities are essential pillars in fostering connections, support networks, and a sense of belonging. These activities, ranging from potluck dinners to community service projects, play a vital role in strengthening the bonds among members, enriching spiritual growth, and extending the church’s outreach to the wider community.
At the heart of church family activities lies the principle of fellowship—a concept deeply rooted in Christianity. Through regular gatherings and events, we can create environments where members can forge meaningful relationships beyond the confines of Sunday worship.
Play and laughter is vital. Healthy families and churches should experience a sense of play. Healthy churches, healthy families, and healthy relationships should create and enjoy customs that call for times of celebration and other memory-making moments. When we think of the many festivals and celebrations of joy that God created for his people, as well as the complete joy we receive in finding new life in Christ, we can see that the one true God is the maker of laughter, joy, and fun. We have permission and reasons to celebrate!
Father God, thank you for healthy churches and families that enjoy interacting with one another. Help us to create opportunities that will not only be a blessing to our church family but to our community as well. Amen.
